Apple Faces

Make your own Colonial Apple Head Doll

Supplies you will need:

  • 1 Golden Delicious Apple- the biggest you can find. It will shrink quite a bit.
  • Lemon Juice - to prevent the apple from turning black as it dries.
  • Craft Wire and small stick- to hang the apple as it dries.
  • Scraps of Fabric for clothes
  • Scraps of Yarn, cotton, or wool - for hair
  • Craft Glue: Like Aleene's All Purpose Glue

Instructions:

To make the head, remove the peel from the flesh of the apple, Leave a little bit of peel near the stem for support as it dries. Once it is peeled soak the apple in lemon juice for about 15 minutes. Then, use a spoon to make an indent for eyes and a mouth.

Once the head is shaped, push a craft wire from the top of the stem through the core and out the bottom. Tie a small stick to the bottom of the craft wire to keep the apple from falling off. As the apple dries, pinch the apple to shape the nose. Note: the apple will darken as it dries. It takes about 30 days for the apple to dry fully.

After the head is dry, remove the wire. The wire can be bent and shaped into arms and legs. Arms and legs can then be poked into the apple. Use the fabric to make a dress for a girl doll or pants for a boy doll. Use small bits of wool, cotton, or yarn to make the hair and attach to the top of the apple with glue.

You now have your own Colonial Apple Head Doll!
